Stain removal

Period Blood

Act quickly for fresh stains—rinse immediately with cold water from the back of the fabric to prevent the stain from setting deeper. Blot gently with a clean cloth; avoid rubbing, which can spread the stain. For machine-washable pieces, soak in cold water for 30 minutes, then apply a stain remover or rinse with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and cold water. Enzyme-based stain removers are particularly effective on protein-based stains. Wash in cold water with mild detergent—heat will set the stain permanently. For delicate fabrics like silk or wool, soak in cool water and consider professional dry cleaning if the stain persists after the initial rinse.

Wine

Blot excess liquid immediately with a clean white cloth—do not rub. Rinse from the back of the fabric with cold water to push the stain out rather than deeper into the fibres. For fresh spills, sprinkle salt or baking soda to absorb remaining moisture, then rinse again. Apply a stain remover or soak in a solution of one part white vinegar to two parts cold water for 15–30 minutes. Enzyme-based cleaners work well on tannin stains. Wash in the coolest water appropriate for the fabric and check the stain before drying—heat will set it. For stubborn wine stains on delicate pieces, professional cleaning is recommended.

Oil and Grease

Do not wet the stain immediately; instead, blot gently with a dry cloth or paper towel to remove excess oil. Sprinkle talcum powder, cornstarch, or baking soda directly onto the stain and let it sit for 15–30 minutes to absorb the oil, then brush away. For machine-washable fabrics, apply a small amount of liquid dish soap directly to the dry stain, gently work it in with a soft brush, and let it sit for 5–10 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Wash in warm water with detergent. For delicate fabrics, use a dry cleaning solvent or have the piece professionally cleaned. Avoid heat until the stain is completely gone, as heat will set oil permanently.

Coffee and Tea

Blot immediately with a clean cloth to remove excess liquid. Rinse with cold water from the back of the fabric. For fresh stains, soak in cold water for 30 minutes, then treat with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water, or use an enzyme-based stain remover. For set-in stains, soak in a mixture of one tablespoon of liquid detergent, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water for 15 minutes. Gently rub the stain, then rinse thoroughly with cold water. Wash with mild detergent in cool water. Avoid hot water and heat until the stain is gone. For delicate silks and wools, rinse gently and consider professional cleaning if the stain persists.

Chocolate

Allow chocolate to dry completely before treatment—attempting to remove wet chocolate will spread the stain. Once dry, gently brush away excess chocolate with a soft cloth or brush. For remaining residue, soak in cold water for 30 minutes. Apply a stain remover or a solution of one part white vinegar to two parts water, or use an enzyme-based cleaner. Gently work the solution into the fabric and let it sit for 10–15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cold water. Wash in cool water with mild detergent. If a greasy residue remains after drying, treat it as an oil stain with a small amount of dish soap before washing again. Avoid heat until fully removed.

Grass

Rinse immediately under cold running water from the back of the stain. For fresh grass stains, soak in cold water for 30 minutes. Apply a stain remover or a solution of equal parts white vinegar and cold water. Enzyme-based cleaners are highly effective on plant-based stains. Gently rub the stain with a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly. Wash in cool to warm water with detergent—some grass stains respond better to slightly warmer temperatures, but test on a hidden area first. For stubborn stains, repeat the soaking and treatment process. Avoid heat until the stain is completely gone. Delicate fabrics should be treated gently and may benefit from professional cleaning.

General Care Tips

Always test any stain removal solution on a hidden area of the fabric first to ensure it does not cause discolouration or damage. Work from the outer edge of the stain toward the centre to avoid spreading it further. Rinse thoroughly after each treatment step. Never apply heat—whether from a dryer or iron—until you are certain the stain is completely removed, as heat will set most stains permanently. For vintage, delicate, or high-value pieces, professional dry cleaning is the safest option. When in doubt, treat the stain as soon as possible; fresh stains are always easier to remove than set-in ones.
